Crystal Math
2012, One video channel, 5.1 Sound, 5000 m Nylon wire

Oh, baby! How you nourish me!

Sylvia Eckermann portrays the estrangement of the financial markets from their human participants, which are increasingly replaced by algorithms, in an imposing fashion by creating a spider's web from many thousand meters of nylon wire as a space for projection and an “expressive metaphor” (Sabine Dreher). Crystal Math, referring to the subterranean networks of optical fibre that interconnect the centres of financial power through inconspicuous carrier hotels, broaches the issue of humanity as a resource of derivative risk-potentials. This web is not a social space
of communication, but rather a trap in which the prey entangles itself. The mathematics of probability turn into the drug of an oracle that subjects the many options of the future to its fictions. Simon Streather's voice articulates these abys-
ses through a text from Gerald Nestler, whose lyricism turns the market into a “financial being”, into “recombinant social DNA”. Oh baby! How you nourish me!
